Grand, Kitchen In A Custom Home—3,000 To 5,000 Square Feet.
This kitchen is about as luxurious as they come, but it’s also got all the homey southern charm one would expect to find on an island just north of Savannah, GA. Although the space is amply appointed with top-of-the-line appliances—including two dishwashers and multiple refrigeration units—the art is in their concealment. Most are hidden behind custom Shaker-style cabinets faced with period hardware. That includes an Oak-clad Sub-Zero fridge outfitted with raised panel doors and antique hinges to resemble an old-fashioned ice box, an Oak-faced trash chute that sends bagged waste down to a receptacle in the basement, and a hands-free, automated trash drawer that opens or closes with only a slight bump of the knee. The gas lines to an industrial-strength Viking range run up through the turned legs of an island that looks like a piece of furniture. As deliberate as Group 3 architects and builder Tom Dickinson were in hiding the heavy-duty equipment, they were equally thoughtful in what they chose to put on full display. It’s the little things that give this space character—apron sinks, a hammered zinc countertop, hand-hewn beams, whitewashed beadboard walls, reclaimed gas lights, and antique glass cabinet doors. All of the flooring throughout the house is reclaimed pine from a Southern textile mill. “The machine oil which long ago penetrated these planks adds an interesting contrast to the natural character,” Dickinson says.
