Project Description
After completing a Master Plan effort for the UMass Lowell South Campus, CambridgeSeven was retained by the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance to design the new Health and Social Sciences Building.
The building houses three academic departments for Nursing, Psychology and Criminal Justice and seven multimedia classrooms for use by all departments on the South Campus. It contains approximately 70,000 gross square feet of new academic space on four levels with a basement that houses mechanical and electrical equipment. The building is designed around a large, rooftop glazed atrium space that introduces natural daylight into the center of the building and creates a large lobby on the ground floor to be used by the University for special gatherings and functions. The ground floor holds multimedia classrooms for use by all South Campus departments and Nursing Department project rooms while the upper three floors are dedicated to the individual departments. Each department has ample space for faculty offices along the perimeter as well as several unique program functions, including testing labs, nursing labs, simulation rooms, research space and student work areas.
The new building consists of brick masonry and granite panels in materials consistent with the existing campus. It incorporates high performance sustainable design and energy efficient features while meeting LEED Silver plus standards.
