Project Description
The Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy (IHSCA) is a charter high school founded by Instituto del Progreso Latino (IDPL). This state-of-the-art facility is heralded to pave the way for the next generation of doctors, nurses, and bio-technicians.
The project re-purposed an abandoned industrial building which was renovated and enlarged to accommodate the unique programmatic components required to educate students for today's health and science careers. The conceptual design of the building seeks inspiration from these programs, arranged to promote learning and causal interaction between the students, faculty and community.
The programs, labs, and classrooms are broken down into four categories to fit within the four levels of the building, named as follows: Community, College, Hospital, and Biotech. Each of these categories were analyzed historically and contextually to provide the basis of the interior design. Through this analysis, a distinct color scheme, graphics and furniture were selected for each level. These themes are applied most prominently to the corridors to provide the students with a positive and energetic interaction space.
The themes then permeate more subtly into the classrooms in order to promote inspiration and engagement as the students progress through their education and strive to attain their future success.
