Project Description
Builder's Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist
The Owner's desired a home full of natural light, in constant contact with the surrounding woods, where every family member could enjoy a connection with the landscape. Design challenges included screening the southern view toward a neighboring apartment building, achieving sustainability while maintaining budget and achieving durability to endure three energetic children.
The design responds with large overhanging roofs that establish the primary shelter under which the indoor and outdoor living spaces infill as functional pavilions. The home opens in all directions to engage the site and create connections to the outdoors. Inside, living spaces seem to float among the tree tops. Windows invite the sun's warmth, and employ natural cross ventilation to cool and introduce fresh air.
Thoughtful orientation, a smart envelope and an open plan take full advantage of the site's environmental character. The result is a home that fully embraces and responds with its natural surroundings.
