Project Description
The former Ancel Home was designed by nationally renowned architect Edward Dart for Louis and Harriet Ancel in 1961. Other than a sunroom addition, no substantial changes had been made to this mid Century Modern home.
Scheduled for demolition as of 2007, the house sat empty for two years with much deferred maintenance. A design flaw in the clerestory design had allowed ongoing water infiltration requiring immediate attention. Other aspects of the renovation included relocation of the kitchen from an interior location to the lakefront (in the footprint of the 1979 porch addition) and reconfiguration of the bedroom wing creating an enlarged Master Suite. Walnut cabinetry and slate terrace were repaired and refinished. Roofing, lighting/electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems were all upgraded, new bathrooms installed, etc.
It was determined that the house would benefit from an attached two-car garage which has been added at the southwest corner of the house, set back and deferring to the original structure.
This project was renovated in accordance with the US Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and granted a Certificate of Rehabilitation by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency in 2008.
