Project Description
The challenge was to remodel an outdated kitchen (featuring mauve Formica countertops!) into a combination Demonstration Kitchen/Entertaining Venue/Family Kitchen for a family that owns a very large winery. The design program included the following: -"Old World" style -The ability to serve family and client groups at a large bar, for drinks and buffet, without impinging on the work space of the kitchen -Space for multiple cooks to simultaneously work together without conflict -Good task and accent lighting -Storage space and pantry in pull-out cabinets -Wine-pouring center, with storage and dishwasher for wine glasses -Coffee Center -Amplfy view to Monterey Bay -Premium quality appliances and fixtures The design solution features a "double island" concept: The work island is 4-1/2 feet wide x 13 feet long, and is designed to look like a piece of furniture, with the cabinet color and the granite counter being different from the remainder of the kitchen. The wine bar/buffet island features a curving section that allows the wine steward to serve guests without being in the circulation path of the working cooks, while also allowing the guests to see one another along the curve. The cabinets and wall panelling are cherry wood. The new flooring is a Versaillles pattern limestone. It deserves an award based upon sheer beauty, combined with achieving complex functional goals. It is a beautiful space now.
