Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
DESIGN ACHIEVEMENT – DLR Group’s design for Engine Company 22 delivers the first stand- alone, newly constructed Washington, D.C. Fire and EMS (FEMS) facility to be built in decades. Engine Company 22 is a key component of the redevelopment of upper Georgia Avenue and the transformation of the former Walter Reed Medical Campus into a 66-acre multi-use and residential development. The new station will enable FEMS to provide state-of-the-art responsiveness to meet the growth of this major D.C. corridor. Given the space constraints on site, the design solution provides a multi-story structure to accommodate FEMS program requirements. Efficient planning of the program resulted in opportunities to introduce additional program space including an additional apparatus bay for future use and an emergency operations center which supplements a primary operations center currently in operation at another facility. It was determined early in design that vehicular and FEMS apparatus access was to occur on Georgia Avenue. Additionally, the program required direct access from the upper floor bunkrooms to the apparatus bays below. These design requirements became the basis of the building’s massing concept which emphasizes that the building height along Georgia Avenue be in keeping with the adjacent multi-story buildings. Along the cross-street and towards the single-family structures, the building steps down gradually towards the street’s residential scale. The exterior use of brick veneer, metal panels, and glazed curtain wall assemblies integrates the past and future of this transitioning neighborhood and establishes the facilities’ civic impact along one of the primary entry gateways into the District.
SCOPE SUMMARY – This project encompassed the design of free-standing 19,300 SF fire and emergency services facility. The design replaces an existing 4-story vacant building located on same site. Work and living spaces include a four-bay apparatus area, offices, a community room, bunk rooms, locker/changing rooms, lounge, dining room, fitness room, and underground parking. Both durable and energy-efficient, the new facility is will achieve sustainability targets and LEED Gold certification, and includes vegetated roofing to meet the District’s stringent stormwater management and green area requirements. Interior spaces maximize opportunities for natural light with strategic placement of exterior glazed curtain walls along the facilities day room and a community use room. DLR Group provided architecture, planning, building energy optimization, and interiors services.
