Project Description
In Newark’s Central Ward, an underserved area with great cultural resources and city services, an open piece of land near New Jersey Institute of Technology and mass transit services presented a strategic, long-term opportunity for TEAM Charter Schools. The nonprofit organization is continuing to expand its presence in the city. TEAM’s Newark Collegiate Academy (NCA) is housed in a new state-of-the-art high school in a vibrant urban environment. The expansive site provides many opportunities for school activities and functions, including car and bus drop-off zones. Integrated in the heart of the community, the building also features two pedestrian-friendly facades.
The school offers students a plethora of in-house amenities many do not have in their current schools, such as a state-of-the-art athletic facility with four gym stations, a fitness center, and locker facilities. A welcoming lobby invites students, teachers and visitors into the building, which also has a separate evening entrance for public access to athletic facilities. With an information commons, theater classroom, and gym all on the first floor, NCA has become a place for the entire community gather for after-school programs, events and activities. The new facility also features daylighting throughout the spaces.
