Project Description
The Owners of this post and beam contemporary, an industrial designer and his family, made replacement of the existing cramped and outdated kitchen a priority when they decided to renovate their house. After rejecting the option of an addition, the Owners and their Architect decided that they could accomplish their goal by incorporating a seldom used sunroom into the space. Existing beams were beefed up in order to eliminate posts that had limited the design possibilities.
A sweeping seventeen foot long central island now serves as a work and gathering place. Cantilevered shelving lightens the mass at the end of the island facing the TV area. The opposite end serves as an eating counter situated within the glass walls of the ‘former’ sunroom offering views of the wooded site. Cabinetry rises into the vaulted ceiling here providing glass display shelving and pantry storage. To avoid an abrupt transition between kitchen and the adjacent area; the oak flooring wraps a “carpet” of porcelain tile.
With the concept established, a Kitchen Design Consultant joined the team to help the Owners work out the details, and select materials, making this kitchen a functional and personalized part of their home.
