Project Description

Builder’s Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist

The design brief from the client started simple- a temperature and humidity controlled area to store their wine collection of +/-1200 bottles. Rather than locate the room in an unseen area of the unit; we elected to place it as a focal point between the living room and the movie room. By placing the wine room here, it created a small hall with access to a balcony where a couple could sit and enjoy the view while sampling one of the bottles.
The design of the room itself came about by studying the various ways in which a wine bottle can be viewed (label side, cork side, bottom) and still be stored properly. Rather then have all the bottles displayed in the same orientation, we designed a stainless steel square form that appears to float inside the custom designed stainless steel racks which house the bottles facing cork side out. Inside the square form, the bottles are oriented to have their label side out. Both types of racks are framed by stone pillars that mark the corners of the wine room. The transverse ends of the room have walnut cabinetry inserted between the stone pillars for storing wine glasses and accessories.
