Project Description
‘A beautiful mix of rustic and modern, classic and contemporary, rough-hewn beams and sleek art glass.’ – Nancy L. Claus, Westchester Home Magazine
Our clients had their version of the American Dream: a farmhouse in a break-taking countryside setting with the conveniences of modern day living. The first challenge started out when the family wanted to find an existing rustic farmhouse and barn to renovate into a summerhouse. When this could not be found; the client, architect, and interior designer had to rethink their options. When the perfect land was found we just had change our approach to constructing a farmhouse from the ground up and pulling it off to pass as a renovated rustic old world farmhouse. Done right, the possibilities could be endless.
The Salem Estate is a magnificent villa of nearly 16,000 square feet, including every outbuilding. Located in the stunning countryside of the North Salem valley, each corner of this home has every opportunity for remarkable view. The front façade of the home was designed to resemble a traditional barn; we even used barn doors on the garage. A turning point in the design phase was the addition of the silo to fully complete the vision. The silo, cleverly designed inside and out, is enclosing a custom spiral staircase made of old growth heart pine and steel with a mahogany, antique wood and steel railing. The west facing side of the house takes a different approach with a pane of glass on nearly every surface taking full advantage of the mountain views.
