Nestled in the hills and trees surrounding Wisconsin’s Elkhart Lake, this terraced, “Stepping House” supports an energetic lifestyle in a quaint environment, while maximizing the benefits of lakefront living.

This new construction in the place of the torn-down old family retreat was recreated in modern architecture and interior design. On an elongated lakeside lot with neighboring properties in close proximity, designing for a family with big personality called for emphasis on the site’s assets with transparent lake views, natural light, and blended living spaces. The homeowner’s ancestry in the shipping industry inspired the deck’s form as a ship’s bow stretching from the hillside to the water.

The site’s compactness was answered with a multi-level design solution that unfurled into this open and spacious four-bedroom, six-bath residence while maintaining privacy and elegance.

Construction types from temperate climate zones inspired the design. Clean lines, blended exterior/interior living spaces, and large glass walls lend themselves well to this lakeside site.

Privacy is preserved from neighboring homes in rising stone walls that give way to transom windows for natural light and tree canopy views. Horizontal and vertical forms create interest in a modern home, and offer a pathway to expanding gathering spaces that draw you to the transparent lake views.

The three-level floor plan is open, both horizontally and vertically, to maximize socializing and views in all rooms. A fully open lower level features a full bath to refresh after a day on the lake, and a central bar as the hub for socializing.

Warm neutrals and textures offer a connection to the natural site. Through the horizontality and style treatments of various natural materials – stone, walnut, cedar, oak – all synergized together, the built home emerges from the hillside to support the location.
