Murphy Brothers Contracting retro-fitted the entire building from top to bottom transforming a former health and fitness club into a state of the art publishing headquarters, making it easier to coordinate and collaborate their editorial, production, IT, sales and marketing staffs, all under one beautiful roof. The clients desired to have wide-open workspace area, bright-flooded with as much natural light as possible. The architect wanted to give the center of the office a New York loft feel, with pendant lighting and no ceiling, producing a sleek and contemporary look with open office areas, dark flooring, light walls and warmed up with touches of wood. The design makes collaboration natural and easy, also providing a lobby and reception area that’s both inviting and more oriented to receiving visitors. The building now boasts a dedicated full-service photography studio, complete with a dressing room and private storage area, and a working kitchen for cooking demonstrations. Since there’s a limited amount of natural lighting inside the building, the architect chose light-colored walls contrasted with dark flooring to give a more open feel. Keeping the palette of slightly muted finishes with beige tones for a sophisticated look, while contrasting with the dark tones of the floor covering, it nicely sets off the Westchester Magazine branding, including magazine covers displayed on the walls. To maximize the natural light, the architect incorporated open spaces around the interior perimeters so the natural day lighting could be appreciated and shared. Harnessing the natural daylight not only has a positive impact on the environment, but a positive psychological impact as well. From electrical to heating & air conditioning to plumbing, they used environmentally friendly design, making sure to include as many energy efficient solutions as possible. For example we incorporated a high level of control in the mechanical systems, such as the HVAC system, lighting motion sensors so the light automatically shut off when offices are unoccupied, and water-efficient plumbing for reduces water use. Other green features include Low-VOC paints, carpeting made from recycled materials and re-purposed California Closets furniture and cabinetry.
