Project Description
The goal of this project was to create a strong biomedical community on the South Campus that includes the Pharmacy and biotech research divisions of the University at Buffalo as well as a testing lab for processing samples in support of the State of New York Department of Public Health and local industry, including BSL3 cultures and radioactive samples. Kapoor Hall, a 160,000-SF facility, was completely gutted and renovated to bring the building and its technologies into the 21st century. The School’s emphasis on both the education of pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical science research has driven a need for highly sophisticated research space; integrated computer technology to gather, analyze, and disseminate data; and unique instructional spaces that incorporate a wide range of audio/visual/data capability.
The upper level floors are dedicated to research activities and designed to support a highly flexible team based research requirements, and provide access to the animal holding facility co-located on the upper level. The semi-open labs were developed to enhance collaboration by locating small research groups of two and three faculty in a shared open lab. This arrangement eliminated the large “ballroom” open lab approach that many institutions have embraced but was counter to the UB culture and research program.
