Project Description
Creating affordable ultra-sustainable housing for infill lots across Metropolitan Phoenix: Working with Vali Homes, a Developer/Sustainable-Consultant and 180 Degrees, a quality General Contractor, our Team has engaged in studying various structures, methods and materials for building on empty lots in well-established Phoenix neighborhoods. These homes are meant as a contemporary equivalent of the “case study” homes of the 1960s- though built for our time and place, and with sustainability in mind. The entry courtyard provides a balance of public/private interior and exterior spaces for the home. The plan provides two bedrooms and an office with minimal wasted square footage and minimal HVAC system. Frameless doors allow this modest house to feel like a larger home. Floor-to-ceiling glazing at the corners of the house maximizes day-lighting and allows interior and exterior to flow into each other. The design process was completely integrated between Developer, General Contractor, Architect, engineers, and most of the on-site sub-contractors. Prior to finding a available location for the project, the team worked for 6 months to produce a design that would fit on any typical site in Phoenix, and be built for the prescribed cost with expected environmental benefits.
