Project Description
Builder's Choice and Custom Home Awards Finalist
This steel and stone stair is the signature element in a complete interior renovation and exterior restoration of a penthouse apartment in the Watergate Apartment building.
The primary design strategy was to provide uninterrupted visual continuity to the perimeter views. The circular stair is composed of burnished steel and Thassos white marble. Optimizing the visual effect of the curved stair, the guardrail is composed of 1/4" steel rods positioned in a book-matched pattern to evoke the flow of the river water. The stone treads and risers reflect light from the glass enclosed pavilion above. A circular pattern of 1" x 3" stone mosaic is at the base landing, echoing the shape of the stair. At the center of the floor, a silver medal was placed as a personal memento of the Owner, a former Olympic Rower.
