Project Description
Now in its ninth year, the Marvin Architects Challenge recognizes architects for projects that exhibit superior design in the categories of Contemporary, Best Transitional, Best Traditional New Construction, Best Remodel/Addition and Best Commercial, along with one Best in Show winner. With projects ranging from a seacoast vacation home to a historic town hall and even a 380-square-foot tiny guesthouse, these structures represent some of the most popular trends in the industry and challenges that are at the forefront of architects’ minds.
Winner: Best Remodel/Addition
Originally constructed in 1928, the Westborough Town Hall was in disrepair and becoming a burden on the community until it was renovated in 2016. The municipality authorized a major renovation to address the aging conditions and bring new life to the downtown landmark. The town hall has continually served as a government center for the Central Massachusetts Community. Prior to the renovation the building was inefficient, underutilized, and inaccessible. In fact, over sixty percent of the facility was not utilized due to lack of accessibility to all levels. Now, the historic building boasts one hundred percent accessibility and new maintenance free clad-wood windows from Marvin® that duplicate the originals still in the building.
Brian Humes was recognized in the “Best Remodel” category in Marvin Architects Challenge 2017. The panel of judges were impressed with the careful attention to detail of the windows, shutters, and classical interior wood trim. They applauded the great efforts to renovate the nearly 100 year old historic town hall, reviving the downtown landmark to its original stature.
