With built-in controls and inverter, the Skystream 3.7 residential wind generator has a 1.8-kW capacity. It is designed for use on properties measuring at least 0.5 acre with unobstructed views and an average wind speed of 10 mph. It is 42 feet tall. 928.779.9463. More
The Endurance S-250 wind turbine can be connected directly to the power grid without the need for an inverter. It has a power rating of 5 kWh and can match the energy requirements of average U.S. households that consume up to 18,000 kWh per year, the company says. A braking system and over-speed protection stop the rotors in cases of extreme high wind or fault conditions. 888.440.4451. More
Solé Power Tile is the industry’s first building-integrated photovoltaic product designed specifically for curved-roof systems, the company says. The barrel-style tiles install alongside US Tile’s traditional clay tiles, blending seamlessly to allow for the collection of solar energy without interfering with the roofline’s aesthetics. The product provides 500 watts per 100 square feet. The Power Tiles are tested for durability, UV stability, color fastness, wind resistance, and more. 267.515.5895. More
Small wind turbines have great potential to serve increasing demand for energy generation while being a cost-effective solution for commercial and residential end-users. However, several obstacles have hindered greater use of small wind turbines. Performance specifications are not standardized, and manufacturer reports are optimistic and inconsistent. Consumers do not have user-friendly tools to compare turbines or accurately estimate energy performance. Consumers and agencies providing financial incentives need greater assurance of safety, functionality and durability to justify investments. These needs soon will be better met when the Small Wind Certification Council begins a certification program for small wind turbines. More
An energy-efficient structure, which is defined as using 50 percent less energy than a building built to the International Energy Conservation Code 2008, is the first logical step toward reducing our buildings’ carbon footprints. When applying renewable-energy systems, or RES, to energy-efficient buildings, these systems can be a net-positive-energy generator. More
