As part of its ongoing commitment to reduce energy consumption in the built environment and achieve carbon neutrality in buildings by 2030, the AIA announced on June 10 the creation of a tool that will generate a report on predicted energy use.
The tool, which will be available on June 14, will be accessible through the ‘‘resources’’ link on the AIA’s 2030 Commitment webpage and is meant to be used on a firm’s entire portfolio, not just its green projects. Once all buildings are entered into the spreadsheet through an easy-to-navigate series of entries, the tool will create graphs that aggregate projects according to three criteria: percentage of gross square footage (GSF) of active projects meeting the firm’s reduction goal; percentage of GSF using energy models; and percentage of GSF for which the firm will collect energy-performance indices. Those firms that have signed up for the AIA’s voluntary 2030 Commitment program can then send the data to the AIA, which will aggregate the information for all participating firms and produce an annual report.
The tool—which has been beta tested by Gensler, HOK, and several other firms, according to AIA spokesman Scott Frank—‘‘was specifically developed to be simple to use and to be used by firms of all sizes on a variety of building types,’’ said AIA president George Miller in a press release.
