The U.S. outdoor lighting market grew by 6.5 percent from $2.8 billion in 2004 to $2.9 billion in 2005, according to a report recently issued by market research publisher Specialists in Business Information (SBI), a division of www.MarketResearch.com. The report shows improved lighting on streets and highways, awareness of the effects of lighting pollution, and strong growth in construction are contributing to an increase in outdoor lighting demand, which is expected to reach $3.8 billion in 2010.

According to SBI, state and local government spending on outdoor lighting infrastructure grew by more than 9 percent, and many agencies are beginning to look at the environmental impact of roadway lighting for the first time.

'Community awareness, including government and manufacturers, is creating an environment of growth, as seen by the positive upswing in LED usage, particularly in traffic signals,' said Cara Morrison, associate editor at SBI, in a prepared statement.

The report, which is available for $1,995 on SBI's website, contains data about U.S. lighting shipments, imports and exports, end-use markets, and industry statistics on five segments: streets and highways, aviation, sports, parks and recreation areas, and poles and accessories. It also identifies key outdoor lighting trends and profiles major manufacturers. Historical data is provided for 2001 to 2005, with forecasts for 2006 to 2010.
