Floating Cloud, Richard Clarkson Studio
A collaboration between Brooklyn, N.Y.–based Richard Clarkson Studio and Dutch engineering company Crealev, the Floating Cloud is an ambient lamp that magnetically levitates approximately 2.75" above a 11.25"-square base using rare-earth magnets, electromagnets, and a location sensor. The cloud itself is made of hypoallergenic polyester fibers and houses red, green, and blue LED modules. Though the cloud does not have an integrated speaker system, it houses a microphone—which is connected to the LEDs—that directs the lights to flash in unison with the beat of external music. The fixture's polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified (PETG-modified) plastic base must remain plugged in for power, but because the cloud is powered through a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the luminaire can maintain a look of seamless levitation. The studio will produce only 100 units of the fixture for a limited time. richardclarkson.com
