This year's Red Dot Awards for Product Design received more than 5,200 entries—the highest number of submissions ever in the 61-year-old design competition—across 31 categories spanning lighting products to fashion accessories to finish materials. Among the categorical winners were a handful of products named the best of their class. Below, we take a look at the fixtures and fittings that topped the category of Urban Design and Public Spaces for their new takes on existing product typologies.

Béton Brut, Beton Kemmler
This prefabricated concrete garage mixes materials within a minimalist form. Béton Brut's concrete frame is topped with a glass-block roof that allows natural light inside, while an artificially rusted steel garage door provides access. Integrated LED fixtures offer supplemental illumination. The garage also has an open-channel draining system, and air grids for ventilation. kemmler-garage.de

Capable of charging battery-powered buses in just six minutes, according to its producer, Flow is the first large-scale production of an e-bus charging mast. Its glass-fiber reinforced plastic housing and hidden hinges and screws make for a clean design that is able to blend in with its urban surroundings. An integrated digital interface allows users to interact with and learn about the product. gahlow.de

This sculptural soap dispenser is equal parts form and function. A chrome-plated finish accentuates Quartz's prism shape. For use in commercial bathrooms, the product's patented air-blowing technology prevents dripping, while a six-LED matrix on its front indicates when soap is being dispensed, has finished dispensing, or needs to be refilled. us.kohler.com
