Twenty-eight years ago, Detroit's East Side neighborhoods were experiencing an economic slump leading to pockets of abandoned lots and houses. Artist and resident Tyree Guyton saw an opportunity to turn the neighborhood into an open-air art project inspiring social enrichment. The Heidelberg Project still stands today as a model for education through the arts.
