Solutions
The clients, who just had their second child and often host large gatherings, found that their house—a cramped, divided space—in Chevy Chase, Md., felt more like a box than a home. They wanted to knock down walls and admit more light, but on a modest budget.
The fix: transform the home into a courtyard house by adding two wings—a spacious kitchen and a roomy master suite—that feature large windows and sliding glass doors that admit lots of light. Though the budget required using less-expensive materials, the team didn’t skimp on the quality of the windows and sliding doors. The remodel also included the creation of a cathedral ceiling in the living room and the addition of an ipe deck along most of the length of the home.
Judge’s Comments
The judges were impressed by the combination of interior and exterior design elements. One judge commented that the change—from cluttered to minimalist—is “dramatic,” while another said “the building is the design.”
