Project Description

For this major expansion of inpatient spaces at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) Midtown Campus, HCM’s services ranged from the critical certificate of need process through to construction administration. Located in an urban center sandwiched between Baltimore’s City’s Arts District to the North and its quickly growing West Side Development, the UMMC Midtown Campus faced many challenges as a community hospital. The changing demographic landscape included low-, middle-, and high-income residents on all sides of the hospital as redevelopment of the neighborhood continues. The Central Care expansion project involved a multi-story, vertical extension of a fully occupied and operational hospital. The addition provided new operating rooms as well as new ICU and IMC units. The new operating rooms were a significant improvement, large enough to accommodate state-of-the-art equipment required for today’s surgeries.

The hospital is landlocked and its options for expansion and renewal were limited.

HCM, having an in depth knowledge of the City, was able to quickly assess the situation with input from the client. By using our collaborative process including 3-D modeling very early in the conceptual planning phase, we were able to effectively communicate various effective options to the client.
