Project Description
Alina is situated on a hill just south of downtown Nashville in an area known as Gulch View, with sweeping views of the city. The 4-story residential building sits atop a raised concrete podium structure and has a total of 50 residences complete with a roof terrace, upper floor community lobby area, and an entry lobby and fitness area where the building meets the street. Large expansive windows are punched into the crisp white facade of the building to emphasize the panoramic views of downtown Nashville, historic Fort Negley Park, and the surrounding neighborhoods. These windows are further detailed with the use of custom fabricated window fins that deepen the presence of the glass while sharpening the edges of the openings.
The design of the building is sensitive to the context of this site in that it is lifted up a full story to provide ground floor amenities as well as provide alley-loaded covered parking. This allows the 4-stories of residences to rise above with higher ceilings and create a taller more elegant silhouette. The building seems to stretch upward like a beacon, visible from multiple locations throughout the city, yet the form of the building remains narrow and tall.
The design team created spaciously dimensioned terraces and balconies are strategically placed to exaggerate the transparency of the building, allowing the inside and outside spaces to coexist. These spaces also add layers of depth and porosity to the structure creating moments of dark and light, shade and shadow as well as elevation articulation that expresses a sculpted building form in a playful, yet sophisticated manner.
The Edgehill / Gulch View area of Nashville has been redeveloped in a chaotic and low-density suburban-style, unorthodox to any city-planning model, known as the Nashville tall-and-skinnies. Alina was developed to provide a stable architectural anchor that stands out in the neighborhood, providing an example of smart growth and community-focused development. The project provides a modern yet timeless building, creating a sophisticated backdrop and identifiable sense of place for the neighborhood.
