Project Description
Originally built in 1890, this historical Aspen residence is located on a small lot overlooking Hallam Lake Preserve. The existing home went through numerous non-historical remodels and additions, and at the time of acquisition had decaying elements throughout the house, eves and porches due to age and weather. In 2011, CCY Architects began conceptual development with the client and the Aspen Historical Preservation Committee to bring new life to the home, adding program elements and incorporating technological advances while respecting the historic home. Working within strict codes, the home was moved slightly, allowing the historic portion to be showcased from the street, with the addition taking full advantage of site views of Hallam Lake and Red Mountain.
In the front, the new addition gives a gestural nod to the historic building, through use of a gabled garage element. To maximize the area, the two-car garage features a lift, permitting more room for work space and additional vehicles. Towards the back of the lot, away from the historic portion of the house, the addition features a flat roof design that holds photovoltaic and solar panels, producing energy and heat to offset energy costs and allow for an ice-free driveway during winter. Fully operable glass walls open from the living and kitchen spaces greeting inhabitants with views and allowing the space to extend out to the patio. The Indoor and outdoor fireplaces at the living and patio lengthen the seasonal use of the operable walls. The upper level includes a master bedroom suite, a guest bedroom and separate guest suite in the Victorian section of the home. A patio terrace provides another area to take in Aspen Mountain and surrounding views. A new basement was added with a game / TV room, a powder room, two bedrooms, utility areas and the lower half of the garage.
