Project Description
Our design for the new Athletic Center creates environments that enrich the daily life of those that learn, play, and work and is rooted in a deep understanding of the importance of creating a facility that goes “beyond athletics.” It will be the largest building on the Potomac Campus. To become a part of the campus vernacular, the building’s volume is broken down into smaller discrete pieces. These pieces are pushed and pulled to create openings in the building to bring in natural daylight and integrate into the site. The Center is situated on the edge of campus at the intersection of multiple nature trails. Instead of interrupting the path network, the building becomes a part of the path network. The building’s “path” organizes the main spaces; the gymnasium, student and visitor entries, athlete and student fitness centers. It also houses informal and group study spaces.
