Project Description
The client, an engineer, and his wife are avid sailors and empty-nesters who raised their children in a traditional home. When a pair of prized lots overlooking a lake became available, the couple jumped at the chance to build a new modern home for the next chapter of their lives. They also wanted the house to serve as a gathering place for their grown children and grandchildren, who visit often. Guided by the undulating land with mature trees and expansive lake views, the architecture firm designed a two-story house and nestled it deep into the site so it appears to be a single-story home from the road. Finished with timeless stone on the first floor and stucco on the second floor, the house features floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides. As the clients have a love of modern design and a clear vision of their new home, the architects' only challenge was accommodating the extensive programming while staying within the desired square footage. Balancing sophistication and playfulness, the architects designed separate living spaces for the couple and their children and grandchildren. In addition to a master suite, three bedrooms, a guest bedroom, and two bunk rooms, the designers included a ping-pong room, a sport court, a swimming pool, a boathouse, an attached two-car garage with charging stations for electric cars, and a detached three-car garage. As a reflection of the owner's engineering expertise, the house includes LED lighting in every room, customization colored "mood" lights in the grandchildren's secret play space, automated louvers on the windows to control light and privacy, a drop down glass railing between the house and the pool, and other next-generation features.
