Just outside of Asheville, N.C., on the fairway of the Biltmore Forest Country Club golf course, local contracting company BlueStone Construction was challenged to design a grand, screened porch addition on a Storybook Tudor originally built for actress Andie MacDowell. The team aimed to build a structure that matched the existing residence’s beauty, scale, and materials and provided the clients with an open, light-filled space in which to entertain year round.
The roughly 650-square-foot interior space soars high with handcrafted eastern white pine timber trusses spanning the ceiling, while a massive stone and brick masonry fireplace, topped with a custom copper chimney cap, draws the eye to the back of the room. In addition to the fireplace, six wall-mounted infrared heaters warm the room on chilly winter days.
Ample natural light is welcomed through the porch’s perimeter of rhythmically-placed arched doors and screen openings. Skylights mounted along the full length of the ridge of the standing-seam metal roof also invite natural light into the space.
At night, black metal sconces and a large chandelier provide necessary lighting for eating and relaxing by the fire.

The clients wished to add a screened porch to their home to allow for year-round entertaining. Their existing home was a magnificent residence, located on the fairway of the Biltmore Forest Country Club, originally built for a famous movie star. The challenge was to design a structure commensurate with the existing home, in beauty, in scale, and in materials. The gorgeous addition was every bit the match to the existing home. A massive stone and brick masonry fireplace capped with a custom copper chimney cap anchors one end of the space, and six wall-mounted, infrared heaters warm up even chilly winter days. A full-length, ridge-mounted skylight caps the standing-seam metal roof and complements the light provided by the rhythmically placed arched doors and screened openings. The interior volume is open and soaring because of the handcrafted eastern white pine timber trusses that span the space.
