Project Description
FROM THE MANUFACTURER:
reSAWN TIMBER co. worked closely with Vita Design Group and the homeowner of this modern Connecticut residence to specify our HAI shou sugi ban charred exterior cypress siding. Amongst the more traditional clapboard siding frequently found throughout the neighbor, this home stands alone a unique, modern design with many natural, sustainable elements – including reSAWN’s CHARRED siding and a living roof.
Vita Design Group is a highly recognized and awarded architecture firm in Westport, CT. The architects at VDG believe the architectural design process is equally important as the finished project. This home clad in stucco and burnt wood siding has a series of interlocking elements that wrap around the central core of the home creating covered exterior spaces and second floor balconies.
HAI is one of several CHARRED BLACK designs for exterior/interior cladding offered as part of reSAWN’s CHARRED collection. HAI is fully charred and then finished without brushing off the soft charcoal layer. This charcoal layer is a sacrificial wear layer that will flake over time to reveal blackened cypress underneath with variations in color from grey to brown tones and over time more grey tones. MATSU is more durable than HAI & MOYASU and will not flake as easily. A reapplication of the top coat will aid in arresting the degradation of the charcoal.
reSAWN’s CHARRED collection features cypress, black walnut, red oak, white oak and reclaimed hemlock that is burnt in the Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban. Our award-winning CHARRED collection pays homage to the traditional Japanese technique of “shou-sugi-ban” aka “yakisugi” without being literal. Historically very specific in their definition, “shousugi-ban” and “yakisugi” have become common nomenclature for modern charred wood designs in general. All of reSAWN’s CHARRED products are made in the USA, in their facility in Telford, PA.
