“The design is clean and tasteful. The color selection is befitting and the approach as a whole is commendable.” — Juror Krista Ninivaggi
Not content to disrupt a ubiquitous image of American teenage-hood, Katherine Hogan Architects scores a second merit win with another project, also in the firm’s Raleigh stomping grounds, that boldly reimagines the environment of childhood learning. Commissioned by Brassfield Elementary School to revamp its aging 1980s home, KHA summoned its resourcefulness to do as much as possible with a limited budget, rapid turnaround time, and a legal proscription against moving any of the building’s existing walls.
Unable to take much out or shift much around, the architects resolved to put a few things in—namely a series of eye-catching ceiling features expanding existing skylights into airy vertical shafts punctuated in vivid, pastel-toned colors. Relieving the former drear of the school’s long corridors, these elaborate apertures are complemented in the individual schoolrooms by new details in similar hues that give each space its own identity and sense of visual excitement. For all the difference in how the school looks, some of the most important changes can’t be seen at all, including a major overhaul of the ventilation system and the floor slabs that will ensure a safer, healthier learning experience for generations of Raleigh students.
