Project Description
CanalSide Lofts lies on the waterfront area of Columbia, South Carolina. Our project is the second phase of a master plan which envisions around 750 units with the remaining parcels possibly included retail or office space, once the density of the area will support them. The second phase of Canalside Lofts includes 153 micro units with tuck-under parking as well as 46, three-bedroom townhomes with attached garages. Stooped townhome entries fronting the street complete the Taylor Street frontage as it extends to the Columbus’ riverfront park from downtown; while the design and detailing complement the existing neighborhood fabric. Smaller micro-units with open floor plans provide for a community who want to live downtown and within walking distance of the amenities and conveniences that entails; fed in part by the growth of enrollment at the University of South Carolina. The site was occupied for more than a century by the Central Correctional Institution, South Carolina’s prison which closed in 2004, and the sold to the city of Columbia in hopes of fulfilling their vision for transforming the site into an active waterfront community. The addition of residents to the area should help bring in more service businesses to the area while providing a welcome addition to the riverfront park.
