Project Description
The addition to a one-story ranch style home in Northern Virginia began with a simple program to create a new master bedroom suite for the owners who are both artists - a digital artist and photographer. Immediately, their interest in the southwest, particularly New Mexico, began to influence the concept. The new mass is pulled away from the original house and reconnected by a linear gallery space. This separation of the two pieces resulted in a courtyard framed on three sides, visible from the main living room of the original house and fronted on the opposite side by a double-sided fireplace which serves both the courtyard and the bedroom. The roofs of the new construction and the cladding of the addition seamlessly tie in with the original structure.
