Project Description
In this 1900's historic Italianate building, the owners wanted to bring the elegance and purity of the house into their bathroom, while also crafting a new, vibrant bathroom space for their children. In the main bath, focus was geared toward keeping the existing well-lit and inviting atmosphere, while drawing attention to the beautiful heart pine floor. The colors of the paint and tile are refined, a timeless white and light brown. The biggest challenge was integrating the shower to read as a cohesive part of the room. During design, the architect had to balance the practical need for tiling and water management in the shower with the look and feel of an open, simple, yet light-filled room. A geometric scheme which organizes the room into 2/3 open floor plan, 1/3 entry and shower area, creates a strong internal juxtaposition for a unique yet successful space. In the hall bathroom, the turquoise floor tiling immediately seizes attention as the rest of the room vanishes into a white glow. As a contrast to the legible materiality of the owner's bath, the hall bath masks everything above the floor in a glossy white, so that one steps out of the hall and is suddenly transported. Designed for two young girls, the bathroom is fun and interesting while still clean and respectable. The challenge was to find an atmosphere that was unique and different enough from the owner's bathroom, while maintaining a level of detail that the girls will be proud to grow up with, and the owners will be excited to share with guests. These bathrooms, though directly next to each other, evoke contrasting atmospheres in a spacial dialogue, reflecting the members of the family. Tailored to specific uses of the inhabitants, the bathrooms bring a level of personalization to the house that makes it unique and enduring for years to come.
