Project Description
Leaving her old lifestyle behind, our client sought a home that would provide her two young children a quiet suburban neighborhood, but that would be an edgy alternative to the bland suburban particularities to which they’d all grown accustomed. As architect and designer, it was particularly important that we nail the task of creating a serene modernist home that commanded its setting in this already well established neighborhood, with spaces that effortlessly flow from outside to inside, to honor the setting while reflecting an urban aesthetic. Transparency was paramount to achieving our goals. Material selection was important from the standpoint of lifestyle, as well as resonance with the exterior wildlife views that are visible from nearly every angle. Metal awnings and large-scale slate tile give the home a grounded but urban contrast. Flooring throughout the main level is maple, with an ebony stain, hand hewn to create a lived-in look. It is paired with high-gloss burl, and complimented with vertical grain wood veneers. The open floorplan is a hallmark of modernism. To maximize the site’s potential, we raised the home’s foundation, gaining optimal views of an adjacent valley, from both upper and lower levels. Windows were carefully positioned to support long striking views and to exploit the sun’s natural orientations. Unexpected touches of red, green, and caramel dance in natural light, filling the space with rich, live emotion. Eclectic colors and shapes are grounded by classic, stylish furnishings. Highlights such as a whole-house smart entertainment system, a massive moveable double island on casters, high-end luxury appliances, and a wet bar located on the main level, provide for flexibility to entertain refined or casual gatherings of any size. The result is a high-tech, new modern look with an industrial feel and a contemporary color scheme appropriate for this vibrant modern family.
