Project Description
This Emergency Department Expansion enabled Hoag Hospital to meet its community’s growing demand for urgent care. The 27,000 SF E.D. expansion increased the total treatment bays from 34 to 52, and introduced five treatment units, each with 10 private rooms. An additional 27,000 SF of renovation of the Imaging Department includes a dedicated CT and General Rad room, 3 Nuclear Medicine rooms, 2 Image Guided US Procedure rooms, Ultrasound, Rad /Fluoro, General Rad Room, 12 reading rooms, and pre- and post-procedure support spaces.
A project challenge was to expand the occupied facility with minimal disruption to patient services. Carefully phased construction effectively minimized impacts of noise and dust, and mitigated risk of infectious contamination. Construction phasing was kept on schedule through diligent coordination with Emergency Department staff.
The renovation improved the patient-centered environment, and introduced sustainable elements to achieve LEED Gold certification. The client prioritized the remodel of the entrance and lobby to create a calming atmosphere for patients and family members. The lobby provides natural light with floor-to-ceiling windows, nature-inspired artwork, and comfortable seating areas. High quality limestone floor, wood paneling, and stone were chosen for the qualities of aesthetics, durability and ease of maintenance. The building’s dramatic new entrance creates a new identity for the Emergency Department, yet still blends with the existing hospital design. The canopied “gateway” and patio offer relaxation space for visitors and staff.
