Project Description

A local college required an art center that reflected the creativity and energy of the student artists working inside. The 26,000 sq. ft. facility includes modern classrooms, a beautiful art gallery and well-equipped studios for the full spectrum of art media taught. The scrim serves as both a representation of the program and as a functional aspect of the design. The design reflects the creativity and energy of the artists working inside, where its shape is drawn from its relationship to sculptural art such as ceramics and glassblowing. Its functional purpose, however, is to shade the large studios it covers while still allowing for passive lighting to illuminate the space, creating a more welcoming and open area for the art center’s users. This is achieved through the semitransparent metal panels that are placed over the steel frame of the device, serving both aesthetically and functionally.
