Project Description

Using Kaiser Permanente’s innovative template system, the Fontana Medical Center replacement hospital improves healthcare delivery methods, while meeting California’s Inland Empire region’s growing demands for healthcare services. The new 490,000-SF, seven-story hospital and bed tower replaces the existing main hospital building, some of which will be converted for outpatient use. The design team executed functional and space programming, with an extensive redesign of the template hospital diagnostic and treatment block. Design challenges that were addressed include improving pedestrian circulation and wayfinding, and increasing efficiency and capacity within the current template footprint. The design optimizes the template hospital with a layer of enhancing patient experiences—this adapts the facility to the needs of its patients and staff. These innovative strategies have set the tone for the next generation of template designs. The replacement hospital was completed four months ahead of schedule and more than $35 million under budget.
