Project Description
EwingCole was selected to develop a master plan for Bayhealth Medical Center that will ultimately provide for a fifty-percent increase to their existing facilities in response to increased regional demand for services.
The plan reorganizes the approach and entrance to the hospital, consolidating numerous existing portals into one primary entrance designed to support and reflect Bayhealth’s commitment to patient care and service. The new entry pavilion will allow patients to arrive, be welcomed and become oriented in a space detached from the main clinical areas. The pavilion includes a multitude of windows with views to surrounding landscaped areas, and is intended to provide a calming space that eases the transition of patients and visitors into the clinical areas of the facility.
The first phase of master plan implementation constructed a 96,000 sf overbuild of an existing hospital building, adding three patient care floors and a mechanical penthouse. This addition included new maternity and pediatric facilities with a universal-room patient floor designed according to Planetree principles of patient-focused care and family involvement.
All patient rooms are private, have access to natural light and views, and can accommodate a sleeper sofa for family members. Bedrooms are equipped for electronic monitoring with personal controls at the bedside for staff assistance, lighting, temperature and TV. The new floors are designed with various amenities including waiting areas, conference rooms, family kitchen, and a laundry/shower facility for families faced with overnight stays. The flexible room designs are also sized for all levels of care, easily transitioning from medical/surgical to intensive care.
Staff work areas have been re-envisioned as patient support centers, positioned at the center of the nursing units for ease of flow and visibility. Communication between staff and patients is also enhanced with concierge-like reception desks and health education nooks.
The second phase of expansion includes a new emergency department, helipad, oncology facility, USP 797-compliant central pharmacy, shell patient bed floor, relocated central utility plant, and a parking garage.
Future projects identified by the master plan include renewal of the existing surgery department and the addition of six new patient bed floors.
