Project Description
This design repurposes a 1960s indoor pool structure that had slid into disrepair. Structural movement, leaks, and mold rendered the structure virtually unusable. The client initially considered complete demolition; instead, we suggested reusing the existing pool house structure. We promoted the program of a new outdoor pool supported by a rehab of the old structure to support leisure activities in all seasons, resulting in the Sun Soaked Pool House. Within the rehabilitated pool structure, we provided pool support spaces such as a changing room and a kitchenette. A fireplace, hot tub, lounge seating, and new trees further augment the interior comfort and usability of the re-purposed structure. Major work included removing the old concrete pool, stabilizing the existing structure, and pouring a new slab over new sub-surface HVAC ducting. Wood planking flanks the new fireplace and along one side of the glass ceiling for shade and warmth. We cleaned the elegant old structure and added simple industrial lighting. On the pool side, a new glass gable, new folding doors, and new roller screens orient and connect the old structure with the new pool terrace. New landscaping provides a separation between the front and rear yards while mitigating the site’s grade changes through the creation of gradually stepped terraces leading to the pool.
