Project Description

Priorities

  • Revive a neglected rowhouse deck
  • Improve deck access from the kitchen
  • Use low-maintenance materials

Solutions

Richard Loosle’s design started with tearing
down a breakfast nook addition and reconstructing it with a wall of
full-height windows and a glass door. An open-grate steel bridge leads
to the new ipe deck over the garage. Red railings around the walkway,
stairs to the lower courtyard, and around the upper-story deck add a pop
of color. A contrasting blue steel outline frames the view from the
upper deck.

The architect provided deck planters for the
homeowner, who is an avid gardner, and herb beds in the courtyard add
texture to the graphic pattern created by a mix of stone and concrete
pavers.

Judges’ Comments

This project’s “extremely
creative use and blend of materials” creates a warm and inviting space,
said one judge. The jury commended the architect for his vibrant
entertaining space that captures the feel of the urban environment.
