Project Description
The Marble Works Building originally housed a marble fabrication shop and was constructed in the early 1900’s utilizing 2 foot thick un-reinforced concrete bearing walls, heavy timber interior columns and wood joists and decking. When the client purchased the building in 2006 the building had been vacant for many years, did not have windows and had experienced damage from water infiltration and exposure to the elements.
The back half the building was demolished to make the project size appropriate for a single family residence while opening up space for a private garden in the rear. The un-reinforced concrete walls were reinforced by adding structural steel stud walls on the interior of the existing walls giving us a plumbing and electrical chase and a space for insulating the exterior walls.
The building is split vertically with public space on the ground floor and private space on the second floor. The public spaces of living room dining room and kitchen are all incorporated in one large room that opens on the private garden. The second floor houses the private functions of the family organized off a central hall.
We reused as much of the old materials as possible for flooring and trim, salvaged the existing mosaic tile floors in the entry way and reused steel beams for previous reinforcement.
