Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Located in beautiful San Luis Obispo, California, this residential remodel + addition started off as a requested by the owner to “fix some existing plumbing issues” with their newly acquired single-story 1,659 square foot mid-century house. After a few months of prioritizing, programming, wish-listing, and soul-searching, this small remodel effort evolved into an exhaustive 2,644 square foot two-story gut and rebuild.
Aside from a few framed walls and existing brick, the majority of structure and materials were replaced. The design team was therefore challenged to maintain visual harmony and aesthetic continuity, while skillfully migrating this small one-story structure into the modern era.
Faced with an outdated utility system, an awkward master-bedroom that opened into a funky playroom addition, as well as cramped common space and disjointed interior to exterior flow, the owners journeyed into uncharted territory when their “wish-list” turned this small remodel project into a complete property renovation. The architect chose to reimagine this residential property as a flowing, sophisticated yet inviting home, complete with a modern indoor-outdoor family space.
The pre-existing living room was unceremoniously disconnected from the back yard. By installing a 12’ wide sliding glass panel door system, the architect turned what was once a physical barrier to the outdoors into an expanded living area that cloaks the line between indoors and out.
Upstairs lies the master bedroom, along with two additional bedrooms for the clients’ young children. In addition to an upstairs utility room and amply storage, the upstairs landing leads to a private family roof deck, with incredible views of the surrounding hills.
After completing their newly imagined renovation with complimentary finishes and furnishings, the owners have settled well into their new home. “We have always been intrigued and drawn to mid-century design,” says the owner, “but in this case, the marriage is better than the honeymoon.”
