Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
The new architecture Campus is the Politecnico di Milano answer to the more and more tough competition between top international architecture schools. The university campus is now under construction and is scheduled to open in Milan in 2020.
The original idea of the project comes from some sketches gifted to the city by Renzo Piano. Later on, Ottavio Di Blasi, one of his closest partner in the eighties, has been appointed for the design of the complex. Both Renzo and Ottavio are “alumni” of Politecnico di Milano.
The site includes two buildings: the “Trifoglio” and the “Nave”, designed by Gio Ponti, another fellow alumnus. Both structures will be restored and revitilized as part of the project.
The new complex will serve as the school’s new Architecture Campus, focused on teaching, researching and innovating. Big numbers are:
The new unobstrusive buildings (4.000 mq) are partially submerged below ground and contain classrooms for 800 students.
The earth of the campus will be the Architectural Model Lab (1600 mq) containing traditional model making facilities (wood and resin) as well as digital and 3D printing facilities. The Student Lobby is placed at the “pilotis” level of the “Nave” building.
The architecture of all the new buildings as well as the cladding of the perimetral walls is built with the same façade system. In order to match the strict timing schedule the building structure is made of dry-assembled steel components supporting X-Lamm wooden slabs.
Topped with accessible terraces, the structures take a low profile and are sorronded by a forest of over 130 trees. The parterre (7000 mq) shadowed by trees is an open-air area equipped with electified benches.
The new Campus will be open to town connecting the northside public park to the Piazza Leonardo da Vinci and the Politecnico historical quarter.
