Modern Comforts Meld With Salvaged Materials in This Craftsman Studio

• Add a light-filled studio space to an existing 1926 Craftsman bungalow 

• Incorporate salvaged windows and materials

The client, an avid painter, wanted to add a studio space to her home in which to draw inspiration for the future from elements that remind her of the past. To combine old and new, architect Bryan Christian used “old-school” materials in conjunction with new design features. It was important to the client that the materials have meaning, so the remodeler incorporated a salvaged Palladian church window and window sashes from the high school that the client had attended. Also integrated into the design are repurposed French doors and wood v-groove tongue boards. On the exterior, hefty roof brackets were added for emphasis, and poplar beveled siding gives the addition an aged quality.

The multiple layers of crafted brackets and the flair edge above the foundation were two aspects of the design that the judge’s especially liked. The judges also noted the remodeler's thoughtful detailing of the base of the addition, which is a darker color and uses larger boards than the rest of the exterior, visually tying the addition into the existing bungalow it nestles against.
