Project Description
STUDIO VALE delivered a full-scope interior design for the fintech growing start-up Moss, to create their new headquarters in a former bread factory in east Berlin, bringing a contemporary work base for up to 80 employees.
AN OFFICE TO GROW LIKE A MOSS
Taking inspiration from moss as a living form as a great metaphor for sustainable growth, this feature became a guiding light when creating the space, not only aesthetically but also in its essence. The design concept uses on-site resources and embraces obstacles, and is prepared for flexibility and growth by applying construction principles of design modularity and design-for-disassembly.
A HYBRID SUSTAINABILITY APPROACH
Striving for circularity, STUDIO VALE created a sustainability strategy around subscription models with fallback solutions that still kept assets and resources in the circularity loops as much as possible. Off-the-shelf conventional solutions complemented the approach due to time and market constraints, but were kept to a minimum.
ADVERSITIES BECOME CENTERPIECES
Architectural obstacles and other inconvenient must-haves were embraced and levered through design, for example with a bespoke ping-pong table as a centerpiece element and a column being wrapped around living moss. Unique details, branding elements and other cool gimmicks give an additional layer of personality to the space, playing with humor within the spectrum between corporate finance and cheeky start-up.
RE-HUMANIZING ACTIVITY-BASED-WORKING
This take on activity-based-working, prioritizes privacy as a way of re-humanizing the office. Visual and acoustic privacy are provided holistically first and foremost by architectural solutions which are complemented with mobile elements such as custom-recycled ceiling panels and desk dividers.
PRIVACY OPTIONAL
Transparency is not a must, but a matter of personal choice. Meeting & single booths at 1:5 per employee ratio highlight the importance of a safe space, clarity of communication and confidentiality in the fintech sector.
DESIGN FOLLOWS AVAILABILITY
STUDIO VALE had the opportunity to step into the demolition of the previous tenants fit-out to safeguard on-site resources. An example is the careful demounting of acoustic baffles, which were repurposed into modular hanging acoustic panels covered in green textile.
