Project Description
Priorities
• Maximize the functionality of the home’s only bathroom with a tub• Incorporate the homeowner’s style to reflect the home's coastal location
Solutions
In many master bathroom remodels, designers and their clients instinctively remove the bathtub to make way for a more functional, spacious bath experience. Remodeler Nick Balding was asked to do the same while retaining the tub. “The master bathroom is home to the only bathtub in the house,” Balding says. “So with one small child and another on the way, the tub was an important feature.”To improve the layout, a corner tub was replaced with a 6-foot tub along the wall. The shower was also relocated, and a transom window and glass surround ensure the bathing spaces take advantage of natural light. Glass pocket doors also let light filter in, while effectively separating the bathroom from the master bedroom and the master closet.
To address the client’s comfort, Caesarstone countertops rest on 36 ½-inch-high cabinets for an elevated surface in the grooming area. The custom vanity also features drawer pulls that double as towel bars, and hidden outlets so the homeowners can keep their small appliances plugged in.
The young and growing family’s coastal North Carolina home called for whimsical touches to round out the design. Clever porthole medicine cabinets and white wood paneling offer a nautical element and a nod to the family dock just outside.
Judges’ Comments
Acknowledging that all the elements work well together in this new bathroom layout and design, the judges said they appreciated the nod to the nautical, calling the project a “well-done themed re-do without being cliché.” Products Used
