Project Description
The South Fermentation Barn is the most recent addition to the Nickel and Nickel Winery Campus. The winery is located in Oakville, California on the historic, 19th century John C. Sullenger 42 acre farmstead.
The 6,000 square-foot South Fermentation Barn is built with hand hewn fir beams, rafters and boards, and features traditional American barn-building methods. The wood-frame barn has been assembled using age-old techniques of hand-joinery for post and beam construction that were common in the 1800’s. Creative engineering enabled the barn to meet seismic building codes, while preserving its 19th century American Farmstead vernacular. The exterior is clad with western red cedar board and batten siding with a limestone wainscot.
The 19th century-style building houses 21st century equipment uniquely suited to custom making small-lot, single-vineyard wines, including 25 computer and temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks in various sizes, floating aluminum catwalks, and night flow air ventilation. 100 percent of the winery's electrical needs are generated by solar panels. This state-of-the-art winery has been built with the original look and appeal of a traditional American farmstead that is both timeless and fitting to its historic setting.
