Project Description

Pound Ridge NY Shingle Style Addition/Alteration by DeMotte Architects

Project location: Pound Ridge, NY
Project type: Addition/Alteration
Completion date: 2007
Architect: Brad DeMotte, R.A.

The existing house was a spec house built in the 1980′s which suffered simply from bad design; poor massing at the entry & poor stucco detailing. The primary goal of the clients was to change the exterior appearance of the house and add curb appeal.

The architect’s design solution was to remove the roof and dormers above the entry and to frame a new roof in its place. The recessed entry was eliminated (which enlarged the foyer) and a new covered entry was created (with a roof deck above).

All of the roofing, siding, and exterior trim was removed and replaced with cedar shingles for the roofing & siding, with PVC chosen for the exterior trim. All of the existing windows remained in place, with grilles being added to complete the shingle style look.

Numerous architectural details were implemented to add visual appeal such as “wavy” shingle coursing, diamond patterns, window boxes supported by brackets, paneled trim around the windows and flared shingles at the base of the walls. Tapered bungalow style columns sit on stone piers at the covered entry, which has bluestone pavers with curved steps.
